M18 is a metric thread with an 18 mm nominal diameter and a coarse pitch of 2.5 mm (ISO 261). A standard hex head takes a 27 mm spanner across the flats.
Carbon steel is the workhorse material for structural fastening. Grade 8.8 and above must be coated (zinc, black oxide or Dacromet) or it will rust outdoors.
